Titanic Had Four Stacks

They Must Have Their Mail Searched

The Titanic was equipped with four substantial funnels, commonly referred to as stacks. These funnels served as outlets for the ship’s engines to expel smoke. Among them, three functioned as smoke stacks, while one served as an air vent. As the boiler rooms started to flood, there arose a significant concern that the abrupt contact of cold seawater with the heated steam retained in the funnels could trigger explosions. To mitigate this risk, the firemen and engineers had to promptly release as much steam as they could from the stacks.
