On the fateful night of the Titanic’s sinking, Captain Edward J. Smith had retired for the evening, leaving First Officer William McMaster Murdoch in command. When Murdoch received the warning about the iceberg, he ordered an immediate turn of the ship and the engines to be stopped. Regrettably, this action came too late to avert disaster. Given the Titanic’s immense size, it couldn’t execute the turn in time to avoid colliding with the iceberg, resulting in a collision on the starboard side.
