The iceberg came into view when lookout Frederick Fleet (depicted in the image) spotted it, but it was just about a minute before the Titanic collided with it. Considering the time required to communicate the warning, the officers on the bridge had a mere 30 seconds or so to make critical decisions, leaving them susceptible to more than a century of retrospective scrutiny. Tragically, Fleet survived the ill-fated night but endured depression for the rest of his life, likely stemming from the profound tragedy of the ship’s sinking. He tragically took his own life by hanging in January 1965.
