Early in pregnancy, you might encounter breast changes such as tender, swollen breasts and the darkening and development of bumpy areolas. The lion’s share of credit (or blame) for this initial pregnancy symptom goes to the hormones estrogen and progesterone. However, the breast tenderness is a necessary part of the process, as it signals your body’s preparation for future milk production.

Furthermore, your areolas, the circular areas around your nipples, may undergo darkening and an increase in size. You’ll also likely observe small bumps on your areolas, known as Montgomery’s tubercles, growing in both size and number. These tubercles were always present, but they are now gearing up to produce additional oils to lubricate your nipples when your baby starts nursing.
